One of Brooklyn Jews' core beliefs is in the pursuit of a meaningful life, one which contributes to an ever-improving world. Many of our participants take pride in their Jewish and universal activism, serving local, national, and international causes.

VOLUNTEER AT THE BROOKLYN HEIGHTS SYNAGOGUE HOMESLESS SHELTER
"The deed of hospitality is greater than the welcoming of the Divine presence" (Talmud Bavli, Shabbat 127a)
The Brooklyn Heights Synagogue Homeless Shelter (131 Remsen St) operates nightly, Monday through Thursday from November through March. Members of Congregation Beth Elohim have staffed the shelter for a week's time each of the last four years.
Provide shelter and food for 10 women who are homeless and hungry.
Volunteers arrive at 7pm to setup the sleeping area and prepare the guest's meal. The women usually turn in by 10:00pm and the overnight volunteers are free to sit and talk or retire for the evening. Come 5:30 the next morning, the overnight volunteers will serve breakfast to those guests who want and break down the sleeping area. The volunteers' shift is done by 7:00am. How long the good feeling of knowing you've provided aid to someone in need lasts is a different story.
